An Exchange on Production and Market for Caritas Bangladesh

24-27 August 2024, Chiang Mai, Thailand

This activity was aimed at supporting Caritas Bangladesh food security project team members, which is involved in community development, gain insights into small-scale farming for climate adaptation. Participants learned innovative techniques for sustainable and agroecological farming and marketing strategies for agricultural products. Summary of activities includes a field visit to observe community initiatives in agroecology practices and safe food production. The emphasis was on small-scale farming, splitting the focus with 30% on production and 70% on marketing. Discussions also surrounded climate adaptation strategies to improve farmer livelihoods and coping mechanisms for climate-related shocks and stress across coastal and hilly areas. The agenda included planning marketing strategies for agricultural products and enhancing post-harvest systems for local produce, which provides for vegetable preservation and adhering to organic standards with Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS).

From this exchange, the Caritas Bangladesh team identified that farmers possess production capabilities but lack marketing knowledge, especially concerning safe or organic food. Additionally, the high cost of these safe and organic products hinders access and affordability. Therefore, the project team intends to concentrate on the entire food system, explicitly focusing on marketing. They also plan to explore collective markets, pricing structures, and management systems within Thailand’s green markets.
