Can We Guarantee Food Security Without Human Security?

On 2 August 2019, Towards Organic Asia organized a panel on ASEAN Community Forum and Special Sombath Somphone Public Lecture: Can We Guarantee Food Security Without Human Security? Sombath Somphone is well known as the founder of Participatory Development Training Centre (PADETC) in Lao PDR. His life and work have been about promoting and supporting Lao society development with equity, justice, and sustainable development particularly through sustainable agriculture. He reached out to all Lao civic actors, in particular young people and local communities, and encouraged their full participation in development processes and to collectively work towards wellbeing in Laotian society. Sombath is also an internationally acclaimed community development worker He continues to be honored as a prominent member of Lao civil society. He received the Ramon Magsayay Award for Community Leadership in 2005. Sombath was abducted from a Vientiane police station in 2012 and has not been seen since. Laos is governed as a communist one-party system since 1975. The case of Sombath was never resolved.
